On April 14th I went to bed hoping that something might happen and we could meet our new child. Going a week past your due date causes some impatience. Around midnight I felt my first contraction and I instantly knew it was the kind that brings about a baby. I waited and timed them for about 2 hours before I knew it was time to go. All of the sudden around 2am they were jumping to 4 minutes apart. I called to the doctor on call and they said it was time to head to the hospital. I woke Kevin and filled him in. He called Kirk who came to stay and care for Gavin who was fast asleep and unaware how his life was about to change. Kirk was at the house instantly.
When we arrived and got settled in I was 5cm. I tried to handle the contractions as best I could but I soon declared I was ready for an epidural. Sadly the anthesliogist is on call so you have to be very patient while waiting for them to arrive. When she finally arrived I was MORE than ready for her pain relief. However the epidural was a royal pain!! It took 6 tries to get it in and then it didn't work. Boy was I upset! At that point I lost control for a short bit there was crying and complaining and lots of apologizing for not being a great patient. Kevin sat by and encouraged me as needed and stayed calm no matter how upset I got....what a solid partner! Kevin and I were still guessing at this point if we would welcome another son or a daughter. I said son and he guessed daughter. Who is always right about this stuff? They said they could possibly try again but it would depend how far dilated I was. I was 9cm!!! Despite some hesitation she was able to do it again and IT WORKED!!
Ahhh instant relief! From there pushing was much easier and it didn't take long at all for our dear daughter, Gwendolynn Mae, to arrive at 9:17am April 15th, 2011. I was filled with emotion and brought to tears at the sight of her. Kevin and I were so thrilled to meet her! Gwendolynn weighed in at 7 pounds 15oz and was 20.5 inches long. She had a head full of dark hair.
Gavin's love is pretty intense sometimes. He is learning you must be gentle and despite the first 2 weeks he hasn't intentionally hurt his sissy. He tries so hard to help her and love her.
